LONDON (AFP) – A fund set up by Prince William and Catherine to receive donations instead of wedding gifts has raised more than £1 million for charity, palace officials said on Wednesday.
The money will go to 26 charities personally chosen by the royal couple, who married with great fanfare at Westminster Abbey in London on April 29, St James's Palace said in a statement.
The charities include some based in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, countries where Britain's second-in-line to the throne, who is now known as the Duke of Cambridge, has visited in the past.
William and Catherine, who are due to visit Canada on June 30 on their first official foreign trip, had asked well-wishers to give donations to the fund instead of giving wedding presents.
"The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted that these charities are able to benefit so positively from their special day," a palace spokesman said.
"They would like to thank everyone who donated and contributed so generously to the charitable fund and for all the kindness and support shown to them throughout the wedding period."
The money also includes a donation by Decca Records from sales of an official royal wedding album, and a donation by photographer Mario Testino's office from sales of a photo of the couple printed in the official wedding brochure.
